"In an effort to cut down on emissions, and get more people to drive electric cars, Salt Lake City has installed six electrical charging stations throughout the city. And the best thing about them, is they’re free for the public to use.
“People can’t be expected to embrace electric vehicle technology if there’s no infrastructure in the city,” said Renee Zollinger, Salt Lake City’s environmental program manager. “This is our way to show that we have a commitment to bring in the infrastructure at the same rate that people adopt that technology.”
The six stalls designated for charging EVs are spread out around Salt Lake City. There are two at the Salt Lake City Main Library Parking Garage, one at 50 East 300 South, another one at 135 S. Main Street, one positioned on Forest Dale Golf Course and another one at Liberty Park.
These convenient charging stations are armed with 110/120-volt alternative current power outlets that can use a standard electric outlet. These stations take anywhere from 4-10 hours to completely charge an EV.
“Anyone that has an electric vehicle today can plug in,” explained Alden Breinholt, public services operation director for Salt Lake City. “There’s no cost to the public to charge their vehicles today.”
These stalls/stations are only for EVs, if a person without an EV parks there and is discovered, they will have to pay a $50 fine. According to Breinholt, there is no way of knowing who parks in the areas designated for EVs, but that will change in the future.
The Chevy Volt and the Nissan LEAF are slated to debut in Utah later this year, at the earliest."
