Electric cars to be given designated parking bays
"ELECTRIC car owners are to be provided with specially designated parking bays in all towns and cities, the Irish Independent has learned.
The Government is drawing up legislation forcing all local authorities to install the special electric bays in their parking zones, similar to those for disabled motorists.
The bays will be restricted to electric cars only, and will have charging points.
The new law, contained in the new Road Traffic Bill, is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
Government sources said the move by Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is in line with the policy of encouraging the greater use of electric cars.
The legislation is part of a drive to have electric vehicles accounting for 10pc of the national fleet -- or 230,000 vehicles -- by 2020.
The ESB has also committed to installing 30 fast-charging points across the State by the end of the year, along with 1,500 public charging points and 2,000 in people's homes."
