"POLICE trialled an unusual new weapon in their war against crime – an electric car.
Portsmouth officers were handed a Nissan Leaf for a five-day taster by the car maker.
The environmentally-friendly vehicle – which the car giant says can travel at a top speed of more than 90mph – was test-driven by officers in the city.
After being charged overnight using electricity from the mains at Cosham police station, the Leaf could travel up to 113 miles before needing to be recharged.
Chief superintendent Nigel Hindle, commander for the Eastern policing area where the car was tested, said: ‘The police service travels many thousands of miles each day.
‘It is incumbent on us to make sure that we have the most efficient vehicles in use by officers and staff, in terms of low cost and sustainability.
‘This vehicle has been used by operational officers in Cosham, who have found it to be ideal for their emergency response and general duties role within a city environment.’"
