"All Nissan dealers in the UK will be required to both sell and service Nissan’s electric vehicles by the end of 2013. This information was revealed by UK MD Jim Wright in an interview with Motor Trade.
Currently there are only 26 dealers where you can buy a a Nissan LEAF in the UK. Wright believes availability will increase once LEAF production has moved to Sunderland, which will occur in 2013.
“By 2013 we want 100 percent to be selling the LEAF. By then we’ll have some form of critical mass in terms of infrastructure and availability of product. With Sunderland production starting in 2013 the tap will be turned on,” he said.
In the UK alone, Nissan has sold just a little over 700 LEAFs, with sales expected to reach 1,500 total for its first year. As it stands, the Japanese factory can only provide a limited number of LEAFs, but once production moves to Sunderland the capacity will increase to 50,000 annually. Most of these Nissan LEAF units be produced for the European car market.
According to Wright, the number of UK sales points needs to be increased substantially if the company wanted to see a profit on its EV investment."
