Nissan Is Speeding Up Charging

"Nissan has joined forces with some of the most elite utility and electrical vehicle supply equipment companies in Europe, in an effort to speed development of cheaper, smaller, quick chargers for EV batteries, and accelerate the installation of publicly-available Quick Charge (QC) points across the country.
Nissan working alongside DBT, Efacec, Circutor, Endesa and Siemens is expected to result in a significant reduction in the price of the QC units. This means that Nissan LEAF drivers, and other quick charge enabled vehicles, will be able to use their vehicle for longer trips and recharge the car’s battery to 80 percent capacity in less 30-minutes.
If everything goes according to plan, this means there will now be thousands of QCs across Europe by the end of 2012. This infrastructure will incite Nissan LEAF ownership to a wider range of buyers who occasionally need to drive longer distances.
A quick charge allows the EV’s battery to be topped up in little more time than it takes to refuel a conventional car.
Nissan LEAF has a range between charges of up to 175km, according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) which tested the vehicle. The more the opportunities for quick charging increases, the greater the driving opportunities for LEAF drivers.
“We are confident that the Nissan Leaf’s range will be enough to satisfy most drivers’ daily needs. However, with a significant number of QCs available across Europe, EV owners who need to drive longer distances will be able to do so with confidence, knowing they will be able to recharge no matter where they go, which we believe is essential for the mass adoption of EVs. ” says Toshiyuki Shiga Nissan COO.
Building cheaper and smaller quick chargers will be accomplished by combining the Nissan QC technology unveiled in the new Nissan DC quick charger, with the know-how and efforts of Nissan’s European partners."
