"EVs are becoming more popular by the minute and with that increase in popularity, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has been rising rapidly. Nissan has recognized this increase in demand has begun construction of a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant at Cacia, Portugal. This is the same area where the transmission for Renault vehicles are built.
Various reports stated that the 156 million euro ($210.2 million) plant is being built adjacent to the Renault transmission plant on a 30,450-sq-meter plot. This new plant is slated to go into operation in December 2012 and have the capacity to produce 50,000 battery modules annually.
Here’s what Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan’s chief operating officer has to say about the plant, “The Cacia plant will be one of three facilities in Europe supplying batteries to electric vehicles produced by the Alliance, starting with the 100 per cent electric Nissan Leaf. Together, the three plants will enable the Alliance to roll out electric vehicles in Europe on an unprecedented scale, bringing the world one step closer to a zero-emission future.”
Nissan is also building a plant at Flins, France that will have space to produce 100,000 batteries."
